On the Road Again

by Sonya on April 7, 2014

A couple weeks ago, I raced the True Grit 100, a rowdy 100 mile mountain bike race in St. George, UT. I had a great time, enjoyed some interesting challenges, and was happy to be riding singletrack again! It will likely be one of the last races I do on a hardtail since I just got word that I am finally getting the NEW Canyon Lux. Their first carbon 29 full suspension mountain bike. I can’t tell you how excited I have to have a FS bike that I can race and cease the beatings at endurance race after race on the hardtail. I do still love my hardtail though!

St. George has chunky desert riding, red dirt, big views, blue skies, and attracted a lot of my racing buddies I hadn’t seen in months. It was a great time.

It was a nice break to race a single day race. The logistics alone seemed simple. I only had to bring 2 kits with me and my luggage wasn’t pushing the limits of the airport clerk’s patience! I came back from the True Grit for a mere 24 hours and found myself on another airplane. This time, I was headed to Dallas/Fort Worth area.

I like going to DFW because I have family there although it’s an unassuming place for cycling, I like the cycling community. Richardson BikeMart and DORBA hosted me for my On Dirt clinic. We had a great showing and I loved chatting with people of all ages about my true passion; cycling! It has made such an impact in my life and my goal is to break down barriers to help people develop into the sport.

Some lucky people got a pair of my custom DeFeet socks!

Later that week, my fiance(Matt) flew in to spend the weekend with my family.

I got to meet my little niece, happiest baby on the planet!

From there, we jetted over to New Orleans for a convention he had for his work. I had never been to New Orleans, and it was everything I expected.

Highlights for me were the music on Frenchman St, touring a cemetery, and visiting the oldest bar in America!

We went to a Mardi Gras party to cause some trouble

Holy Hot Sauce!

After a couple days, it was back to British Columbia for a 2 week stint. I was glad to get a break, I’ve been all over this winter. It’s been fun, but I needed to hunker down and actually train! I’m heading to Sea Otter on Wednesday followed by the Titan Desert Stage Race a week later!!!

My new obsession!  I have been wanting to get into fatbiking, especially living in Colorado for 9 winters and more recently in BC this winter.  Where there are stunning mountains and great summer mountain biking, there is also snow in the winter.  I got my hands on a Fatback on Friday. I haven’t been able […]

The bike is a place of healing, a source of dynamic challenges, a space for lofty dreams, a guide to inspiration, a vehicle of adventure, a tool to make friends, a sweat therapist, the key to mental and physical well-being, and a life teacher in graceful success and frustrating disappointments.
